Meet Captain Alex Gibson

About Captain Alex

I have grown up on the island and have been on the water for as long as I can remember and couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else. My father has taught me so much about boats and how to run and maintain them and has passed down lots of knowledge to me. I have grown up learning on smaller boats such as 13 ft Boston Whalers, and my father’s 26 ft twin outboard Mako. I

have been working with Nantucket Harbormaster Sheila Lucey and her team for the past four years and I have learned so much from her. I am currently a seasonal Assistant Harbormaster and operate vessels such as the waste pump-out vessel (23 ft inboard engine), patrol vessels (31 ft and 28 ft outboards), as well as the Buoy tender vessel (28 ft). Through the Nantucket Harbormaster and Coast Guard, I have been a part of several search and rescue operations, and have assisted the Coast Guard in training.

I also have experience in dewatering sinking vessels as well as refloating partially submerged vessels. I have experience doing basic maintenance on outboard engines as well as inboard engines(diesel and gas). I am currently a Sophomore at Massachusetts Maritime Academy studying Marine Engineering. I am First Aid/CPR/AED certified and have taken an OSHA 10 course. I am a fast learner and love spending time on the water and I am always eager to learn more.
